Jonathan Ames' writing is very apparent, with colorfully troubled characters, awkward over-the-top situations, and the theme of strong friendships all being part of this show, as well. But it really got a toehold and is now making me laugh so much, it hurts. (A comparison could be made with Miranda July's stuff.) Maybe I'll go back and have another look at Bored to Death, just to make sure…) The show is hilarious! Other posters compared this to Gary Shandling, etc, and I just don't see it -- not by a long shot. According to Jonathan Ames, the fact that Jason Schwartzman resembles a young Al Pacino is what gave him the idea for the kidnapping story on the first season finale, mirroring Pacino's character in Dog Day Afternoon (1975).
