La Trêve is a true discovery in the list of Belgian fiction. The Break opens with Yoann himself under investigation – for what we don’t know – being questioned by a criminal psychologist. A recently disgraced big-city cop moves to a small town just in time to lead an investigation in a rare murder. The similarities are unavoidable. The stories are complex but easy to follow. I loved how fully fleshed out he was, how present in each episode rather than becoming the dead black guy. The Break TV series from Belgium, now on Netflix, is full of dreams and surprises. I was fortunate to stumble onto this gem via Canadian Netflix, and it was the intense acting talent of protagonist Yoann Peeters (Yoann Blanc) and the family drama subplots - with Yoann's daughter, Camille (Sophie Breyer)) and her immensely watchable friend Zoe Fischer (Sophie Marechal) - that kept me interested in the first season, but Season 2 was an entirely different ballgame. 13 out of 16 found this helpful. Series usually let me down after the first season, but watching the 1st and 2nd season...I'm ready to wait for as long as it takes (please don't rush the process) for the 3rd season!! As the unstable detective pessimistically asserts to his underling "Anyone is capable of murder". But with that cloud hanging over his head he returns to his childhood home of Heiderfeld, with his sullen daughter who missed the big city even before she left. Gripping to say the least .. also..a good crime series do let you keep guessing who' s done it to the last second ...it has got it all! Lots of good characters and good plotlines, but Peeters gets to be exhausting and it doesn't feel like the people who are supposed to keep him in check but don't ever get checked for it. And Yoann’s investigation, opposed by local cops now, and interfered by higher-ups then, leads to many shocking and perverse discoveries.The investigating cop, the primary character, looks like an average Joe, and nothing like the movie stars as the usual leads in such shows look. (You can be sure a lot of people "Shazam" those moody theme songs to find who who's behind them).

The comic relief couple, who murder two people, drive off in their new RV never to refered to again (neither are the people they murdered discussed). But a show doesn't have to be wholly original to be good. I loved Driss' character. The Break taps into this very desire of the human mind, along with our desire to solve the crime before the cop on screen does, so that we can prove we are smarter. Then we have Yoann's uncanny knack for getting people (indirectly) murdered (and this time, more than one body). I forced myself to finish Season 1. The entirety of the event unravels after the murder is discovered. La Trêve contributes to the Belgian tradition of an uncomplicated display of socially unsophisticated villagers, and is at moments humorous.
