Basically the whole family has showed up, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, etc. This film blew me away ;shocking , funny , tender , suprising etc etc . The whole family gathers in celebration(festen)at a large isolated hotel, just one year after the suicide of one of the daughters. To date, I haven't been a fan of dogme films (I.e. I had already seen The Hunt which is by the same director, Thomas Vinterburg. A film that you just have to watch , forget the overblown oscar style of movies , this is just so simple and so raw . This is a drama done very much in a documentary style, similar to Grey Gardens.

Beautifully shot (the handheld camera gives it a family video quality witch goes perfectly with the story), cleverly written, outstandingly acted (Ulrich Thomsen will pierce a hole trough your heart). Thoroughly recommended for anybody who wants to see drama for grown-ups without the gimmicks or Hollywood names- my only tiny quibble would be with the Danish-English subtitles, which don't translate when one particular character is speaking German, which means that at least one joke gets missed!
