The Pardoner's Tale begins with the travelers listening to stories as the host of the group invites each one to speak in turn. The host makes a few crude comments, stating that he would rather cut off the pardoner's 'relics' than pay him a cent. The three drunks swear an oath to find Death and slay him before nightfall. After shocking his audience with his audacity, the pardoner goes on to tell the story of three young men from Flanders who live wild lives, drinking lavishly, gambling, partying, and sleeping with women at will.
All thoughts of Death leave them as they plot to get the money back to their own village. The terrible man is also aware that he preaches against what he himself practices. In fact, he accuses his host of being the greatest sinner of the group and challenges him to 'pay up' first. Unfortunately, people fall for his tricks, wanting to believe he can help them solve their problems or absolve their guilt. Lesson Summary. After telling his tale, the pardoner apparently forgets that he admitted earlier to being a fraud, and attempts to sell relics and pardons to his listening audience. Although the young ruffians don't meet Death, they do find an odd elderly man who taps the ground with his cane, begging his mother to open the earth and let him in, complaining that not even Death will listen to him.





Before continuing the story, the pardoner gives a brief sermon on the evils of drunkenness and gluttony, throwing in all kinds of Biblical names and allusions.
