Twice a year, for 15 weeks, our Child Life Program offers comprehensive internship training to qualified students currently enrolled in an academic program in Child Life or a related field. If you reside outside of a 60 mile radius, a video conference interview may be conducted.Cohen Children’s Medical Center follows all dates for acceptance notifications set forth by the ACLP. However, we will accept a student if the school does not require such an agreement.Orientation will include hospital training from the volunteer department, on-unit orientation with the intern supervisor and a child life program orientation, during which interns will rotate through each unit/area that child life covers.Develop and complete three to five goals per rotation. Students must have a child life practicum with direct onsite supervision of a certified child life specialist.
This full-time internship is a 15 week, 600 hour commitment, usually divided into a seven and eight week rotation; once these are complete, you may have the option to continue for two additional weeks in an area of your choice.All interns will be supervised by a certified child life specialist.

Our Child Life and Creative Arts Therapy Program offers a broad array of services to pediatric patients and their families. Care Child life specialists focus on the social and emotional needs of children by providing developmentally appropriate preparation for medical procedures, education about diagnoses, pain management, and developing coping strategies. Child life specialists provide opportunities for play and creativity by promoting emotional expression, self-esteem, and independence to foster growth and development while in the hospital.At the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital, our Certified Child Life Specialists engage with patients and their family members in many hospital settings including inpatient units, outpatient specialty clinics, the emergency department, surgery center, and the sedation unit. If you wish to receive school credit for your internship, applications will only be considered if your school/university has an existing agreement with Northwell Health.
