ST HELEN'S PASSAGE Reputedly, the pub has its own ghost. The Turf may not be Oxford's oldest pub but its ancient foundations support a warren of small, oddly shaped rooms, connected by narrow passages, small staircases, and two small, busy bars. Take the trouble to find this wonderful, atmospheric pub. It’s all happened here – malt roasting, cock-fighting, gambling, prostitution and during the plague, the Medieval practice of setting cats alight and tossing them over the city wall to transfer human suffering onto animals. We were taken there by friends who live in Oxford; I don't think we would have found it on our own.
